Service Hours Reflection
I learned many things when completing my service hours. I learned that helping other people in need is a good thing whether it is helping the hungry, elderly, environment, etc. I also learned that doing service hours can be a good and a fun part of my time. Instead of staying home on the weekends and doing nothing, I learned that going out and completing these task helped me stay active. Doing service hours is great for the community and helps it become a healthier and a better environment. Cleaning trash off the ground, being friends with the elderly, and volunteering at places with no cost are ways that our community can stay strong.
For this quarter, I completed an hour and a half at Home Sweet Home and the other one and a half at the Excelsior Library to complete my three hours of service. My responsibility at Home Sweet Home was to help one of the elders play bingo. At the Excelsior Library, my responsibility was to write down the number twenty on tiny post-its and attach them to every count of twenty postcards or flyers, so the workers could keep track of how many are in each rubber band. The challenging part during my time at Home Sweet Home was trying to talk and help the elders tell them where to place their chips on the bingo card. I tried to talk as loudly and as slow as I can, but I did understand why some of them were not able to hear me. The challenging part at helping at the library was that there was a lot to do. There was a big box filled with postcards and another box with flyers. We had to count twenty at a time, rubber band them together, and stack them in an organized way. The other challenging part at the library was that my friends and I were rushing because I had to go somewhere right after, but ended up staying overtime and late to the place I needed to be. Although, I felt that is was ok since we got to finish our job at the library. My favorite part about doing my service hours was that I got to spend time with new people and see how their lives go on and also doing work with my friends.
My favorite place to complete my service hours would be helping out at the food bank. At the food bank, I got to be with a huge crowd of people. Especially some close friends who made my time there more fun that it already was. It was a great experience my first time there and I would want to go back anytime. I did enjoy the other places I volunteered at, but the SF Food Bank was so far my favorite.
I feel awarded as a good person when I do service hours because I have been doing my community a favor by helping it become a better place. Everyone should start to do service hours because it is a good part of your time and you get to have fun while doing a job. It does not matter where you do the service or when you do it, but people today should take time out of their schedule to explore and find out what jobs can be done to help this community become stronger. Community service gives everyone a chance to interact with the world and learn more about it. The more we help serve our community, there is a higher chance of it becoming a stronger, happier, and healthier place.
Here we are at the SF Food Bank! The Epiphany class of 2015 gives our time towards those who need some products. Our job was to label, pack, and store corn. I cannot wait to come back in the Summer to help out at the Food Bank!
My classmates and I at Caltrans for about 2-3 hours cleaning the area. You never know what you find when you are cleaning under the freeways! Cleaning our community is important in living healthy and strong!
Here we are again! Posing in front of one of the Food Bank's finest truck. Doing community is a good way to give back and hang with friends!
When I am not at the SF Food Bank, I do some similar work at O'Keef Hall to pack cans as well! This is a very quick, but enjoyable process. Even though I am graduating, I will definitely come back to Epiphany to help out with cans.
