BLACK HISTORY POEM: LOUIS ARMSTONG
Born Louis Armstrong call me Sathchmo or Pops
I play the trumpet, cornet, and sing non-stop
Looking for jobs left and right
from selling newspapers
to singing jazz late at night
New Orleans, Louisiana, what a rough town
Born in poverty, a poor neighborhood
But livin’ in the “Battlefield” never brought me down
Summer of 22, second cornet was my first gig
Working on new music you would really dig
The Hot 5 was created, but soon broke apart
There were harsh review, had a rough voice, it was a sign for a new start
Made it in the movies and wrote a book
You should read Pennies from Heaven, or Swing that music, so go have a look
Civil rights was a struggle, but Armstrong said what was right
It was the bravest, most definitive moments of his life
This is me, the only... Louie

Found Poem: Of Mice and Men
We gonna have a house and couple of acres
We gonna have some cow, pigs and rabbits that I’ll let you tend, Lennie
Guys like us, work on ranches, work up stake and blow it inta town
We gonna work on the ranch
And live off the fata the lan
But you ain’t gonna say a word. You jus’ stand there and don’t say nothin
You broke the mouse pettin it, Lennie
You held her dress like it was a mouse and we had to hide from the guys chasing us.
You crushed Curley’s hand with your big paw
Why you got to get killed, pup?
Will I still get to tend the rabbits?
I didn’t mean no harm George
If you get in trouble, hide in the brush until I come for you
Say it over to yourself, Lennie, so you won’t forget it.
What you got there, sonny boy?
I ain’t gonna talk to you or anything- George says you’re jailbait
My hair is soft and fine, here - feel it.
I done a bad thing
George ain’t gonna let me tend the rabbits
We gonna have a house and couple of acres

Dear Editor,
Today, about 92% of women choose abortion when it comes to carrying a baby with a birth defect. Choosing abortion means exterminating one’s life. You take away its future and everything that could go on with that life’s existence. No matter what selfish reason there is, these adults are responsible for the life God provided them and the world.
I am definitely not a supporter of abortion. It disgusts me when adults don’t care about a life growing in them. They should be thankful for what they received from God. It is important to not neglect the fact that He is bringing new life to earth. Adults may think that having a child is too much work or they can’t afford it, but as long as they commit and find a way to successfully care for the child, they can make it through.
There are variety of solutions to choose from when it comes to finding help to raise a child, but abortion is not one of them. If someone cannot give life to their newborn, they could put them up for adoption. At least that way, the child could be properly raised. Sometimes the adult doesn’t want to give their child to a stranger. In this case, giving the child to relative is another choice. Like the movie I watched, the woman gave her child to a close friend to raise for a couple years. She then scheduled a day to see her and was very happy to finally see how beautiful her child was. After seeing her sweet little girl, I bet she was thankful for changing her mind and bringing her into the world.

A Child Called It: Synopsis
A Child Called It is an emotional and dreadful story about a little boy named David Pelzer who suffered a miserable life. Before David was brutally beaten up and treated unfairly by his mother, Catherine Pelzer, the little boy lived a happy normal life with his four other brothers and parents who used to plan vacations and have fun together as a family. This seemed to change after the father, Stephan, does not show up at home lately and tends to work more at the firestation than he normally does. Unfortunately, for David, he has to face the consequences.
David’s unstable, alcoholic mother starts to do devious things to him that puts the boy’s death on the line. She starves him, so he makes a decision to steal food from school or the store. This leads to David getting into more trouble than he already is. Whenever he gets home, he is told to stick his fingers in his mouth so he can throw up and show to his mom that he had not eaten anything. David is then forced to eat his own vomit if he had been caught. He is also forced to do things like; drink spoonfuls of ammonia or eat his little brother’s poop. In order to survive, David tries his best to challenge all of his mother’s tricks. The boy was not considered a son, but her slave, a bad boy, and an “it”.
All that David has dreamed of was to be accepted, to be treated fairly, and to be loved and cared by someone who called him their son. He did not want unnecessary tricks played on him. He did not want to sleep in the basement wearing the same clothes that were old, torn, and dirty. His four brothers had no courage or was interested in helping the poor boy. His dad sometimes stepped up, but then stopped to be there. During these hard times, even when he had no one to turn to for help, he thought of his dream and hoped that it would come alive one day.
Freedom of Religion
To have religious freedom is like picking your outfit. No one can tell you what you can or can’t wear. Your style represents who you are and how you differ from everyone else. Without that freedom, we would be living in a boring world because of the non-diversity among us.
People should not be forced to believe what they don’t believe in. Back then, everyone was required to believe in a certain religion. Though, some people did not agree with that particular belief. The differences between these people resulted in different beliefs, which formed new types of religion. Unfortunately, people who believed in something other than what they’re suppose to had to face the consequences. This outraged many people who then protested for religious freedom. Without those intrepid individuals, we would not be able to express our God in our own way.
There are many reasons for the importance of religious freedom. God made everyone with a mind and opinion of their own. As a matter of fact, we gain more knowledge from those who believe different than us. This allows people to be opened minded and attract others to be part of a different religion. Religious freedom also results in diversity, traditions, and of course, peace. All of these are important because it’s what forms our daily lives. Religious freedom is our own human right and no one can take that away from us. Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God(1 Peter 2:16). As long as we honestly believe and form a relationship with Christ, we can enjoy this freedom.

Happiness
Everyone in the world has their own opinions. With these variety of spoken words, we are able to live in a society where ideas are shared and created to become something big. Now, what do you think people will say if you ask them on their opinion of happiness? You probably expect to hear something like, “feeling great and being positive”. Some might even describe happiness as being able to afford everything and to live the luxurious life. It all depends on who you ask and how they’ve experienced happiness in their own lives.
If I was to define happiness in my own words, I would say, “being surrounded by the things you love and enjoy”. By this, I mean being accompanied by your close friends, family, television, food, etc. I think being happy is not a one person job. We need others to fill up the spirit, so that our lives are enjoyable. Moments with those we love and care for is definitely something worth happiness. Eating your favorite foods or watching your favorite sports team is also something that makes you feel happy inside. I could go to a theme park and ride every roller coaster, or I could stay home and watch my favorite movies. Both would make me very happy, but sometimes the little and simple things are what’s best. You know that you are surrounded by the best things life has to offer when you have that gaiety feeling.
What I love about family gatherings, birthdays, holidays, etc, is that I get the chance to spend a whole day with all my relatives. Most of them live far away, so I don’t get to see them very often. Every time we have a party, good vibes are surrounding the air since there is never a dull moment when I am with them. Spending time with my family is absolutely what happiness should be about. Being able to catch up and make more memories has to be the best feeling yet. This is my number one reason to be happy in life because my life would be a bore without my family by my side whenever I need them.
Something else that surrounds me almost everyday is my passions. I have a couple things I like to do that keeps me contented. I love setting foot at the gym, park, dance studio, and even my own room. When I play basketball, something in me rises and tells me that I want to be doing this for a long time because it makes me feel superior. Listening to the beat of the drums and moving my body is actually very relaxing even though it is very tiresome. When I am alone in my room, I love just sitting there and reflect on myself. I could also just be jamming out to music and dancing , or maybe even playing the ukelele and singing. All of what I take pleasure in keeps me together. I know that when I am feeling down, doing what makes me happy can lift me back up.
There are many reasons to be happy in life than to look down on it. It could be the big or little things, as long as you are able to put that smile on your face.

Blanca Flor (white flower) Skit:
Performed by: John, Karen, Krystal, Jason, Almarie, and Yaritza
Long ago a beautiful but vain queen had a daughter she called Blanca Flor. Like her mother, the child was a beauty. Every day the queen looked into her daughter's sparkling eyes and smiled, but as the girl grew, the queen began to envy her. She worried that people would admire her daughter more than they admired her, and this thought she could not bear.
Belva Lockwood Poem/Skit

Belva was born in New York in 1830. She was widowed at 22 and moved to Washington, D.C., where she successfully proposed for a bill to give female federal employees the same pay as men. Lockwood earned her law degree in 1873, where she became the first woman to argue a case to the Supreme Court. She ran for president twice, and helped the Cherokee people win a $5 million reimbursement from the government. She died in 1917 in Washington, D.C.

Explaining a process
How to properly clean cuts and scrapes
Intro: Properly cleaning cuts, scrapes, wounds, etc, is important because it helps heal faster and prevents from having the chance of getting infections. Who has ever gotten a boo boo and blown on it after you fall and scraped yourself. I think that’s what a mom’s first instinct to do because the cool air makes it feel better. Though, that’s exactly what you don’t want to do because you are blowing all the bacteria from your mouth into the open wound. Today, I will show you how to properly clean specifically a road rash, which is basically a skin injury caused by falling on road surfaces.
Step 1: Get an alcohol wipe and wipe your tweezers, so it is clean when removing the rocks inside your wound. With the tweezers, carefully pull out all the tiny rocks stuck in there. You want to take out the gravel because you do not want to get an infection. The wound will also not heal if the gravel is not taken out.
Step 2: You then want to clean the wound. The easiest way to clean the wound is just by taking a towel and wetting it with tap water. Press the towel against the scrape for a couple minutes until the stinging cools. (you want to avoid using hydrogen peroxide or alcohol on the wound because it kills good skin cells)
Step 4: After putting pressure on the wound, remove the towel and apply some antibiotic ointment (Neosporin) around and carefully over the wound.
Step 5: Once it’s covered with ointment, you can cover the wound with a big bandage or gauze.
